Selection of small capacity ORC systems for integrating of a polygeneration plant with cascade use of geothermal energy

The ORC technology in cogeneration systems has by now reached a level of full maturity. In geothermal applications it is well accepted, with an 8% share of geothermal power capacity installed worldwide. Moreover geothermal resources of medium and low temperature (below 150 ° C) are the most abundant in the world, Mexico for its geological characteristics has great potential for these resource types. Due to this fact there is a need to consider geothermal development to meet the demand for electrical power and energy of the human settlements close to these resources. An alternative is cascade use of medium and low temperature geothermal energy in a multi-product concept. This paper evaluates and discusses a methodology for technology selection and optimization for the integration of poly-generation plants with cascade use of geothermal energy. The basic scheme used for multiproduct concept with cascade use of geothermal energy consists of three energy levels with three main technologies respectively. An energy analysis is performed considering geothermal resources in the temperature range 80 to 130 ° C, typical of different zones in Mexico. Preliminary techno-economic analysis is performed to carry out the evaluation and selection of main technologies. For this purpose, an optimization code based on binary variables and manufacturer’s information was created in order to define the optimal combination for different situations of geothermal resource. The energy analysis defines some general considerations for selection of ORC cycle and guidelines to integrate with other geothermal cascade uses. In particular, the selection of ORC is established to reach maximum efficiency and lowest capital cost via optimization. All assumptions for system components performance calculation are set on the basis of literature data and datasheets of real power plants.
